L&D Initiative of the Year 2102 Winner – Bupa Care Services NZ
Bupa had completed extensive analysis prior to starting and so had a clear purpose and established outcomes. This enabled them to use pre assessment as a benchmark, setting them up for a good evaluation. The initiative was very relevant to its target group and demonstrated an ability for it to be taken further. The overall programme was well designed with assessment built into programme. Good use was also made of champions in the workplace to assist with assessment. The initiative also specified workplace activities to assist with retention and improvement of skills learned, enhancing transfer of learning. Overall the judges felt this was an excellent example of applied best practice principles.
L&D Initiative of the Year 2102 Highly Commended – DB Breweries and WorkBright
This highly commended entry had a clear business case and excellent tracking data for measuring progress and improvement. It was a sound programme within a non-traditional topic area, and used its own staff to make it really relevant to the business. There was a good attempt at genuine evaluation with quantitative data use for participant feedback and incident tracking. Overall this entry came within a whisker of winning but was ultimately pipped at the post, but the judges felt it would be unfair not to recognise the quality of this entry.

FOCUS OF THE AWARD
NZATD, in association with NZATD Education Trust, introduced the Learning and Development Initiative award to recognise excellence in the design and implementation Learning and Development programmes within organisations. The key focus of this award is to find examples of best practice, where the learning and development programme is aptly suited to the environment in which is delivered and is an integral part of meeting organisational outcomes.
The winning entry is:
- A project or programme designed to address a specific organisational need that achieved the desired outcome during the two years immediately prior to the submission date for entry; or
- A programme implemented for the first time during the two years immediately prior to the submission date for entry, which is contributing towards the organisation’s desired outcomes and is intended to be continued as part of “business as usual” in the future; or
- A specific intervention that has significantly raised the profile of learning and development in the organisation and had had a notable impact on individual and/or organisational performance and processes within the period immediately prior to the date for submission.
